About
the subject: |
| |
|
Kuchipudi
is such a unique form, a tasteful blend of grace,
vigor, elevation, sensuality, control and abandon.
With its roots buried in the soil of Andhra
Pradesh – INDIA, Kuchipudi was born in a remote
village from which it derives its name. In the
early days, Kuchipudi style of dance was in the
form of dance dramas, the main purpose being to
inculcate divine ecstasy which invokes immortal
bliss and brings one closer to the path of
salvation. The themes were religious in nature and
performed by groups of dancers who led a nomadic
style of life. Though they were patronized by the
royalty, in course of time, this led to a
degeneration of values and the dancers were
subject to feudalistic
abuse. | |

A
need for revolution arose and Siddhendra Yogi, an
exceptionally gifted scholar and artist, who lived in
the 14th century, gave a definite format and purified
this ancient art. Kuchipudi is the only dance form where
all the four abhinayas [Angika, Vachika,
Aharya& Sattwika] are given equal importance.
The major attraction in kuchipudi dance style is
performing ‘Tarangam’. The most interesting
aspect here, however, was the introduction of dance on
the rims of a brass plate with a filled water pot on top
of the head.
Bhamakalapam, as it is
widely known, revolves around the Pranayakalaha
[romantic quarrel] between Satyabhama and lord Krishna
and the ensuing viraha of Satyabhama which finally ends
with their union.
Keerthana, krithi, javali,
padam, ashtapadi, sabdam, tarangam,
kautam,
kalapam are the performing items in Kuchipudi
Dance style. |
